Your tasks
As a senior expert for applied optimization, you will ensure that state-of-the-art Operations Research methods are applied within Deutsche Post DHL Group. Providing methodological guidance to other scientists in the team, you will jointly run projects in a wide variety of applications, bringing business benefits to our operative divisions. Tasks may include improving the network design of our global transport network, or optimizing the routing between more than 200 countries, workforce scheduling, simulations and many other challenging business problems in strategic, tactical and operational levels.
Specifically, you will derive an analytical framework for data analytics projects based on the concrete business requirements and operational processes. You will conduct data analyses, develop mathematical models, implement prototypes and guide the team conceptually. You will interpret modeling results in a business context and discuss these with the relevant stakeholders, including members of top management. In order to embed data-driven decision-making in operations, you will drive the build-up of methodological skills and knowledge transfer acquired from completed projects. You will also use your expertise to help identify new strategic application areas, use cases, or products by applying innovative methods and technologies.

Your profile

  • University degree in (Applied) Mathematics, Industrial/Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Physics, related natural sciences / technical degree, or comparable qualification
  • At least four years of relevant professional experience in business environment on top of a graduate degree. 
  • Extensive knowledge of mathematical optimization and its implementation in practical usage, knowledge in machine learning, statistics and/or forecasting is a plus
  • Experience in analyzing complex datasets and building mathematical models
  • Experience in at least one of these fields is a major plus: vehicle routing models, heuristics, meta-heuristics, large scale mixed-integer optimization, decomposition methods or column generation
  • Very good object-oriented programming skills and/or experience in scripting languages (Python, C++, C#, R, Java or other)
  • Strong in business communication, project management and guiding more junior colleagues for personal and technical development.
  • Ability to produce outstanding creative and analytical solutions based on clear and thorough analyses of complex processes and business relationships 
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Comfortable explaining complex analytical and technical content to various audiences, ranging from operational specialists to members of top management
  • Energetic and success-oriented problem-solver
  • Independent work ethic, integrity and loyalty, positive “can-do”- attitude
  • Passionate team player
