Overall Role Purpose

  • To command DHL/SNAS Aviation aircraft safely and efficiently in accordance with all company and regulatory rules and regulations
  • Is responsible for the operation and safety of the aeroplane from the moment the aeroplane is first ready to move for the purpose of taxiing prior to take-off until the moment it finally comes to rest at the end of the flight and the engine(s) used as primary propulsion units are shut down.

Specific Role Context

  • This position has full oversight and control of the aircraft once the Captain has assumed control.
  • Is responsible for the safe operation of the aeroplane and safety of its occupants and cargo from his arrival on board until he leaves the aeroplane at the end of the flight.

Specific Role Challenges

  • To maintain a sound knowledge and understanding of the applicable Civil Aviation Regulations, aircraft systems, Standard Operating Proceduresand carriage of dangerous goods.
  • To foster solid working relationships with the crew on every flight in a dynamic environment where the Captain could be flying with a different crew member on any given day of a week.
  • To encourage crew members to participate in decision making processes and to distribute work load evenly amongst crew members.
  • To instil a firm understanding of the importance of OTP.



  • The captain has full authority and responsibility for the safe and efficient conduct of the flight.  He shall ensure that the aircraft to which he is assigned is airworthy, properly and adequately serviced and that the loading is proper and secure.  He shall make himself familiar with the route and terminal areas to be used and ensure the weather and terminal reports indicate the flight can be made safely.
  • Be responsible for the proper execution of his duties that:
    1. Are related to the safety of the aeroplane and its occupants; and
    2. Are specified in the instructions and procedures laid down in the Operations Manual.
  • Refrain from operating an aeroplane if he knows that he is suffering from or is likely to suffer from fatigue or feels unfit, to the extent that the flight may be endangered.
  • Has authority to disembark any person, or any part of the cargo, which in his opinion, may represent a potential hazard to the safety of the aero plane or its occupants.


  • Ensure that all operation of aircraft under his command meets the highest possible standards of safety and proficiency at all times.
  • Has authority to give all commands he deems necessary for the purpose of securing the safety of the aeroplane and of persons or property carried therein. This responsibility gives the Commander complete authority to take over-riding and final decisions regarding any aspect of an operation which, in his opinion, is necessary to conform to accepted safety standards. He is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft and for the performance by the crew of their individual duties.


  • Ensure compliance with BCAA / GACA Regulations and all company policies and procedures as specified in the company Flight Operations Manual, Standard Operating Procedures Manual and Aircraft Flight Manual.
  • The Commander or the pilot to whom conduct of the flight has been delegated will, in an emergency situation that requires immediate decision and action, take any action he considers necessary under the circumstances. In such cases he may deviate from rules, operational procedures and methods in the interest of safety.


  • Advise Management regarding any safety issues that affect or have the potential to affect operation of company aircraft
  • Advise the Maintenance Department regarding the serviceability of the aircraft under his command and being to their attention any item that may have the potential to affect the normal operation of that aircraft
  • Advise the Flight Dispatch Department of completed Flight and Duty times and bring to their attention any potential where these limitations may be exceed
  • Advise Flight Dispatch /Management anytime that physical impairment of the pilot may affect the normal operation of the aircraft
  • Advise Management, the appropriate Airport Authority and Regulatory Authorities regarding any incident, accident and other reportable occurrences as described in the company Flight Operations Manual
  • Should any event of note occur during a flight a report must be submitted via a Trip Report. This will ensure that problems/lessons learnt are disseminated.


  • Operate in accordance with the company Flight Operations Manual, aircraft Standard Operating Procedures Manual and Aircraft Flight Manual.  Comply with Air Traffic Control rules, procedures and instructions.  Ensuring that any passengers are briefed on the location and use of emergency exits and relevant safety and emergency equipment.

Skills / Qualifications

Skills ( Specific and or technical skills)

  • Airline Transport Pilot License
  • Experience commensurate with aircraft type and laid out in the Training Manual.
  • Sound knowledge of the applicable Civil Aviation Regulations.
  • Good communication skills are a prerequisite for this position.
  • All components of CRM should be fully understood and continually practiced.
